What Makes Fraxel Laser Therapy Unique?

Until recently there were only two laser options to treat aging and sun-damaged skin, ablative and non-ablative laser procedures. Ablative lasers provided very positive results, however, were associated with significant side effects and prolonged healing. Non-ablative lasers provided minimal healing time and carried fewer risks but required numerous treatments over several months resulting in limited improvements.

Unlike ablative lasers that remove the top layer of skin, the Fraxel™ Laser is specifically designed to treat just a fraction of skin cells in the target area. This “fractional” treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections.

What Is The Treatment Like?

Treatments take around 20 to 25 minutes and are performed in the doctor’s office using only a topical anesthetic and a blue tint that highlights the contours of the skin. Treatment plans depend on the extent of wrinkles, scarring and sun damage that you have, however, on average a typical range of treatments is 3 to 5 usually spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart.

How Will I Feel and Look After Treatment?

You may feel a slight sunburn sensation, which can last for a few hours. Your skin may have a pinkish tone for several days and mild swelling that may last a day or two. These are very normal signs that reflect the healing process is underway. You may apply make-up or shave soon after treatment and you may return to all your routine activities immediately.

LED Photomodulation has become one of the preferred treatments for fine lines, hyperpigmented lesions (brown spots and freckles) and other skin problems associated with photo aging. LED Photomodulation is the interaction of light delivered through Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to activate cells causing them to produce collagen and elastin proteins resulting in skin regeneration. Additionally, LEDs can lessen the breakdown of skin containing collagen. 

How Is LED Photomodulation Different From Laser And Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?

Other light-based therapies, including intense pulsed light and laser treatments rely on thermal injury to the skin’s collagen, water or blood vessels in order to create changes in the skin’s appearance. LED Photomodulation eliminates tissue trauma to effect change, therefore, patients are not subject to the possible discomfort associated with wound healing.

How Does LED Photomodulation Work?

LEDs offer a totally natural, non-ablative method for skin rejuvenation that reduces visible signs of aging and reverses the damaging effects of the sun. The light from the LEDs interacts with cells and stimulates them to produce new collagen and elastin.The system is coded in such a way to stimulate specific cell changes. By manipulating the codes, different treatments can be designed for specific applications.

What Is The Treatment Like?

The treatment is performed at your doctor’s office and takes only 5 to 10 minutes.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Typically, treatments are spread over several weeks or a few months. The number of treatments and the treatment times will vary depending on the problem being treated, the amount of surface area treated and the area treated. Since the results are progressive, you will notice a greater correction with each treatment. As full correction approaches, treatment intervals can be expanded to three to six month intervals. Since the skin continues to age, maintenance treatments will be required.
